a guide to villa gecko in lovina:
address jalan cendrawasih, gang 1, number 1 banyualit, kalibukbuk, lovina
how to get there? – coming from singaraja, after 6 km on the main road to the west you will enter the lovina touristic precinct by driving under a carved archway over the road, portraying dolphins and other things. A hundred meters or so after the archway you will drive over a bridge. The first street to the left, just after a hardware store (pay attention as it is fairly narrow and is partly obstructed by a sign on the road just before the turn) is jalan cendrawasih (clearly marked). After 50-60m on jalan cendrawasih (some houses on the left and coconut plantation on the right) you will take the first lane to the right. The house is the first one on your right when you are in that lane (called gang 1). There is a currently vacant land between the house and jalan candrawash. This land has coconut and mango trees. It also belongs to us. Feel free to use its produce or as additional parking area.
the house
the house is a recently built traditional balinese house modernized with western comforts. It is set on a 400m2 land. Although in a quite lane location it is conveniently situated near the main road, the beach and all the facilities the lovina tourist precinct has to offer. It offers a living room, 3 bedrooms (which currently sleep 5), 2 bathrooms, 2 western style toilets, a dining and kitchen area, a laundry area as well as a front and back verandah. The house is currently accessed and secured by a locked sliding metal gate under the porch. The house is tiled throughout.
the living room
the living room is relatively spacious and is accessed directly through the front door. It is well furnished and decorated with sofas, pillows, entertainment and display unit, corner bookshelf with lamp and a coffee table. It has a ceiling fan and lights as well as several paintings and carvings.
the entertainment and display unit provides a new quality 29’ lg tv, a new dvd player (also plays divx, mp3 and has a usb port for displaying photos), as well as a new satellite receiver with in-built positioner. Over 300 channels are available. Tip: as the dvd player remote interferes with the satellite receiver, please ensure you switch off the satellite receiver at the back of the unit (ie not just in standby) before using the dvd remote or operate the dvd on the player itself. The bedrooms
villa gecko comprises 3 bedrooms, 2 of which are accessed directly through the living room, the third at the back of the living room. All bedrooms are equipped with a wall controlled ceiling fan. 2 sets of linen are supplied for each bed. The double bedroom has a balinese style poster bed in quality timber with a quality new mattress and a mosquito net. It also has a large teak wardrobe, a side table with drawers, a bedside lamp and clockradio. the second bedroom has a large teak single bed with a quality mattress, a teak wardrobe and a side table with lamp.
the third bedroom has a metal framed single bed with pull-out second bed underneath and a small wardrobe.
dressing/ service room
this room is situated behind the living room and gives into the master bedroom, bathroom and toilet. It is furnished with a large custom made teak vanity with large mirror, a linen cabinet /wardrobe with teak mirror.
bathrooms and toilets
the house has 2 showers and 2 western style flush toilets. The first bathroom is tiled with natural black stone. It has a hot water shower and an indonesian style ‘mandi’. It is conveniently situated next to the vanity near the main bedroom. Next to this bathroom there is a separate toilet equipped with a tap and health faucet (as well as toilet paper). Due to the limited capacity of sewerage, please refrain from using excessive paper amounts or flushing any other materials.
the second bathroom is situated behind the kitchen and is accessed through the back verandah, near the laundry. It combines a shower and a western toilet, also equipped with a health faucet. Dining room and kitchen
the dining room and kitchen are accessed through a hallway past the bathroom and toilet. They are newly built. The dining area has a large teak oval table with six matching chairs. A ceramic watercooler is provided next to the table. There is a new fridge with freezer compartment. The kitchen has all the basic conveniences with tiled benchtops, double sink with tap, gas cooker with two burners, wooden cabinets and drawers. A large range of appliances is provided, including a toaster, coffee percolator, kettle, juicer, mixer, rice cooker, etc. There is also a wide range of crockery, cutlery and various utensils. A more comprehensive list is available in the inventory.
laundry area
the laundry area is situated next to the back verandah, accessed through the kitchen or the garden. There is a new 6 kg washing machine that’s easy to use. Instructions are available but in a nutshell just ensure the water is connected to the tap next to it, switch it on, select ‘fuzzy’ (full automatic program) and select your water level then press ‘start’. It will ‘sing’ when it’s done. There a clothes drying line in the garden and also a portable one should it rain. Some soap is provided to get your started.
garden, temple and fishpond
the garden is relatively compact but pleasantly landscaped and well-maintained. It is planted with a variety of shrubs, trees, plants and beautiful orchids. There is a wide concreted area for parking and other activities. As mentioned, the land just to the east could also be an extension of your garden if desired. as this is a real balinese house there is of course a house shrine. One element of this shrine is dedicated to the ancestors of the previous owner and will be moved to their new location once the house they are currently building is completed. There is a nice fish pond next to the entrance door, by the front verandah. The pump to action the fountains is set on a timer you can adjust if required. The strainer attached to the pump should be cleaned from debris every few days to maintain its efficiency. Evaporated water can be replenished, preferably with well water. There are a variety of fish, which should only be fed appropriate food in small quantities. Alternatively they survive without extra food from insects and plants – including lovely lotus, or the caretaker can handle this. water
villa gecko is connected to government water services. It also has water pumped from the well on site. The well water can be used to water the garden, wash the car, fill up the pond, etc. There are 2 taps in the garden. The one connected to a hose is the well water. To action it you need to switch on the pump. The switch is situated just next to the washing machine’s power point. Please switch off the pump before turning the tap off and when not in use to avoid damaging the pump. Government water is used through the house in the kitchen, bathrooms, toilets and washbasin as well as through the other tap in the garden if required. The main water tap is located in the garden (near the hose) under a concrete slab. The house currently has hot water in the main bathroom and 'cold'water elsewhere, although you will find that on the north coast of bali it is in fact luke-warm and a very comfortable temperature for a shower. although government water is now reportedly of international purification standards (and therefore theoretically drinkable) we recommended that guests use the supplied ceramic water cooler instead as drinking water. Replacement bottles are easily and cheaply (currently just over $1 for 20l) purchased at a variety of nearby stores.
electricity
villa gecko’s electrical system has been upgraded to a total of 2.2kw. Electricity is 220v ac/dc and uses european style power points and plugs. Australian adapters and powerboards are available through the house if required. There is at least one powerpoint in every room.
several perimeter, porch and garden lights are connected to a light sensor (located above the pond). They automatically switch on at night for security and switch off during daylight. Garbage disposal
there is currently no government garbage collection organised in this street. Tenants can either use a dumping hole at the end of the vacant land just across the entrance pathway or dispose of garbage in plastic bags in a large container situated outside one of the major hotels on the main road (sunari hotel) nearby the house. Alternatively guests can leave their garbage in plastic bags in a container outside the house for collection on request – see services below.
gas
propane gas is supplied in a 9kg bottle connected to a gas cooker. The bottle has been fitted with a safety valve. The bottles can easily and cheaply be refilled locally by the tenant. Alternatively the property carer can arrange for a refill on request. Services
